Hjerl Hede is not just a museum. It is also one of the most beautiful sceneries in Denmark. Extensive heaths and almost impassable oak-scrub surround Flyndersø, the largest heath-lake in Denmark.
The area covers 1200 hectares, which is composed of plantation, heathland and the last third of oakscrub, pastures and the museum area.
The main part of the area was bought and named in 1910 by director and ex-minister Hans Peter Hjerl Hansen (1870-1946).
